ABOUT.
In an age of endless information and sensory overload, Silly Definition emerges as a necessary artistic response. The artistic brainchild of Joe McNamara (whose solo work previously garnered radio play on BBC Introducing), Silly Definition channels the anxieties of our times into something tangible and visceral, a "consolidation of ideas into one neat package" that unflinchingly finds order in chaos and meaning in the noise.
Sonically, the project marries the cerebral, off-kilter funk of Talking Heads with the volatile, boundary-pushing energy of the contemporary London Windmill scene. The sound is built on a tightly-wound foundation of driving, motorik rhythms and jagged, wiry guitar lines, creating a compelling tension that allows McNamara's vocals to veer from sardonic, observational spoken-word to frantic, cathartic howls. It’s a sound that is as intellectually engaging as it is physically restless, a dance party for the anxious.
Around McNamara, the project operates as a revolving collective, inviting a fluid lineup of collaborators for each performance. This commitment to improvisation and experimentation means that song structures are treated as starting points, not destinations. Arrangements are deconstructed, solos are untethered, and the energy of the room is invited to shape the set in real-time. The result is a potent, unpredictable event, a visceral exchange between the performers and the audience, where the barrier between a rehearsed song and pure, unfiltered creation is thrillingly blurred. With new music slated for release in Autumn 2025, Silly Definition is primed to bring this electrifying, ever-evolving live experience to stages over the coming months.
